How to Link Your Own Demat Accounts for Off-Market Transfers on CDSL Easiest

For active Indian traders and investors, moving securities between your own Demat accounts has always been a common practice. Whether you’re consolidating holdings, managing multiple portfolios, or simply reorganizing assets, the process needs to be straightforward. CDSL has recently implemented a critical update to how these “off-market” transfers work on its Easiest platform, introducing an additional authentication layer.

Previously, you might have simply initiated an off-market transaction between your linked accounts. Now, to enhance security and streamline transfers between your own Demat accounts, CDSL mandates the use of its “BO Linking Setup” feature. If you’ve recently tried to transfer shares and encountered an “Active link between the seller and buyer BO does not exist” error, this new requirement is the reason. It essentially means your ‘From’ and ‘To’ Demat accounts, even if both belong to you, haven’t been formally linked via this new setup.

Understanding the “From” and “To” Dynamics

The core principle remains: the Demat account you log into CDSL Easiest with will always be treated as the “From” account. Under this primary login, you can then link multiple “To” (beneficiary) accounts. This means if you want to transfer shares from Demat A to Demat B, you must log in using Demat A’s credentials. Conversely, to transfer from Demat C to Demat A, your login would need to be with Demat C. If the “From” account (e.g., Demat C in the second scenario) isn’t already registered on CDSL Easiest, you’ll first need to set up a new Easiest account with it as the primary.

This setup ensures that the initiating account is always the one logged in, making the process intuitive for those managing multiple Demat accounts.

Step-by-Step Guide to Linking Your Demat Accounts

The process for linking your own Demat accounts on the CDSL Easiest platform is straightforward. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Log in to CDSL Easiest: Navigate to the official CDSL Easiest website. Use the credentials for the Demat account you intend to use as your “FROM” account (the one from which shares will be transferred). Once logged in, double-check your dashboard to confirm the correct “FROM” Demat Account is selected.

  2. Access BO Linking: From the main dashboard, locate and click on the “Transaction” tab. A dropdown menu will appear. From this menu, select the “BO Linking” option.

  3. Initiate BO Linking Setup: Within the BO Linking section, you’ll find “BO Linking Setup.” Click on this to begin the process of adding your beneficiary Demat account.

  4. Enter Beneficiary Details: You will be prompted to enter the details of the “To” account.
    • In the “Enter Buyer BO” field, input the full Demat account number of the account where you intend to transfer shares.
    • In the “Enter Buyer PAN” field, provide the Permanent Account Number (PAN) associated with that beneficiary Demat account.

  5. Complete Verification: After submitting these details, follow the subsequent on-screen instructions to complete any necessary verification steps. This might involve an OTP or other authentication methods.

  6. Confirm Linking: Once all steps are successfully completed, your beneficiary Demat account will be linked. You can then proceed with using the Easi or Easiest facilities for your off-market share transfers between your own accounts.

This enhanced linking mechanism from CDSL is a move towards greater security and clarity in off-market transactions. For experienced traders and investors, understanding and implementing this setup is key to ensuring uninterrupted and secure share transfers between your personal Demat accounts.

What Happens After Linking

Once linked, you can initiate off-market transfers through CDSL Easiest without hitting authentication errors. The link remains active for future transfers—you don’t need to repeat this process each time.

Remember that the transfer itself has separate steps: adding the beneficiary as trusted (which takes 24 hours), then initiating the actual transfer with ISIN, quantity, and execution date. If you submit before 6 PM on a trading day, execution typically happens the same day.

Multiple Account Scenarios

If you maintain three demat accounts and want flexibility to move shares in any direction, you’ll need to set up links for each transfer route. That means registering each account separately on CDSL Easiest as the primary account, then linking the others as beneficiaries under it.

This feels redundant but it’s how CDSL’s system works. Each FROM account needs its own login with its own set of linked TO accounts.

The good news: once set up, moving shares between your own accounts is tax-free. Broker charges may apply depending on your DP, but there’s no capital gains tax when ownership doesn’t change.

CDSL may update its platform interface, verification workflows, or linking requirements as systems evolve or new regulatory guidelines are implemented. Always verify the latest process on the official CDSL Easiest platform before proceeding.
