Transferring shares between your own Demat accounts is a routine aspect of managing investments for many. Whether you’re aiming to consolidate holdings, segment portfolios, or simply reorganize your assets, the process should be clear and secure. CDSL, India’s central depository, has recently refined how these “off-market” transfers are handled through its Easiest platform, introducing an important extra layer of authentication.
This updated system means that a direct transfer between your own accounts now requires formal linking using the “BO Linking Setup” feature. If you’ve recently encountered an “Active link between the seller and buyer BO does not exist” message when trying to move shares, this new requirement is likely the reason. It signifies that your ‘From’ and ‘To’ Demat accounts, even if both are yours, need to be explicitly connected through this setup.
Understanding the “From” and “To” Accounts
The fundamental principle for transfers on CDSL Easiest remains straightforward: the Demat account you use to log in will always be designated as the “From” account. Under this primary login, you have the flexibility to link multiple “To” (beneficiary) accounts. This structure implies that if you intend to transfer shares from Demat A to Demat B, you must log in using Demat A’s credentials. Conversely, to move shares from Demat C to Demat A, you would need to log in with Demat C. If the “From” account (for example, Demat C in the latter scenario) isn’t already registered on CDSL Easiest, your initial step will be to set up a new Easiest account with it as the primary login.
This design ensures the initiating account is consistently the one logged in, making the process logical for investors juggling multiple Demat accounts.
Linking Your Demat Accounts: A Step-by-Step Approach
Connecting your own Demat accounts on the CDSL Easiest platform is a clear process. Here’s a guide to navigate it:
- Access CDSL Easiest: Begin by visiting the official CDSL Easiest website. Log in using the credentials for the Demat account that will serve as your “FROM” account (the source of the shares). After logging in, confirm that the correct “FROM” Demat Account is displayed on your dashboard.
- Navigate to BO Linking: From the main dashboard, locate and click on the “Miscellaneous” tab, then select “BO Linking” from the dropdown menu.
- Initiate BO Linking Setup: Within the “BO Linking” section, you’ll find “BO Linking Setup.” Click on this option to begin adding your beneficiary Demat account.
- Provide Beneficiary Details: You will be prompted to enter the details of the “To” account.
- In the “Enter Buyer BO” field, input the complete Demat account number of the account to which you wish to transfer shares.
- In the “Enter Buyer PAN” field, provide the Permanent Account Number (PAN) associated with that beneficiary Demat account.
- In the “Enter Buyer BO” field, input the complete Demat account number of the account to which you wish to transfer shares.
- Complete Verification: After submitting these details, you’ll typically receive an email from CDSL with a verification link. Click this link, enter the seller’s (transferor’s) PAN or Demat account number, and follow the on-screen instructions, including generating and entering an OTP, to confirm the linking. The beneficiary account should be added instantly upon successful verification.
This enhanced linking mechanism from CDSL aims to bolster security and clarity in off-market transactions. For experienced investors, understanding and implementing this setup is vital for seamless and secure share transfers between personal Demat accounts.
Transferring Shares: The Next Steps
Once your accounts are successfully linked via the BO Linking Setup, you can proceed with the actual share transfer.
- Select “Transfer FROM” Account: On the CDSL Easiest homepage, ensure your desired “Transfer FROM” Demat account is selected.
- Access Transaction/Setup: From the menu toolbar, navigate to “Transaction/Setup.”
- Authenticate Off-Market Transactions: You will likely encounter a prompt to authenticate off-market transactions. Click “OK” and proceed to generate and enter the OTP as per SEBI guidelines.
- Go to BULK SETUP: Select the “BULK SETUP” button.
- Configure BULK SETUP: On the BULK SETUP page, you’ll typically configure the transaction details. Enter the execution date and the Beneficiary Owner ID (BOID) of the receiving account. For transfers between your own accounts, the reason for the trade is usually “Transfer to own account(s)”.
- Add ISINs: Click the “Add ISINs” or similar button. In the pop-up, choose the shares (ISINs) you wish to transfer from your Demat account and specify the quantity. You can add multiple ISINs if needed. Ensure the “Reason for Trade” is correctly selected, such as “Transfer to own account(s).”
- Verify and Save: After adding the ISINs and quantities, select “Verify.” You will receive a prompt asking to save the transaction; confirm by clicking “OK.”
- Commit the Transfer: You will return to a page showing the shares ready for transfer. Select the shares you want to move and click the “Commit” button. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number and email for final authentication. Enter the OTP and your CDSL Easiest PIN to complete the transfer.
Important Considerations
- Timing: If you submit your transfer request before 6 PM on a trading day, it typically processes on the same day.
- Charges and Taxes: While moving shares between your own Demat accounts generally doesn’t incur capital gains tax, as ownership doesn’t change, your Depository Participant (broker) may levy certain charges. Stamp duty usually applies only if there’s a consideration involved in the transfer; gifts are often exempt.
- Account of Choice vs. Trusted Account: CDSL Easiest offers “Trusted Account” transfers, allowing you to pre-notify up to four CDSL Demat accounts for transfers authenticated by a PIN. “Account of Choice” transfers, on the other hand, allow transfers to any Demat account, including inter-depository transfers, and typically require a digital signature certificate. For transfers between your own CDSL Demat accounts, the “Trusted Account” or BO Linking approach is commonly used.
- Multiple Accounts: If you manage several Demat accounts and desire the flexibility to transfer shares in various directions, you’ll need to establish links for each transfer route. This means registering each account separately on CDSL Easiest as a primary account and then linking the others as beneficiaries under it. While this might appear redundant, it’s how the CDSL system manages transfers effectively. Each “From” account requires its own login with its specific set of linked “To” accounts.
Following these steps carefully will ensure a smooth and secure transfer of shares between your own Demat accounts using the CDSL Easiest platform.
